At its core, psychedelic integration therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental, non-pathologizing space for those who are curious about, planning on, or having previously explored altered states of consciousness through psychedelic substances.
In our initial session we will assess where you are in your spiritual journey and psychedelic process and I will meet you there. I will gather background information on how you have used these medicines in the past, whether you are still using them, the challenges or roadblocks faced during past experiences, if you are planning to continue your explorations, and how you have integrated your past insights into your daily life.
If you have no prior experience with these substances, we will address safety, intention, set and setting, risk factors, what to expect, how to navigate through “bad trips”, and other helpful tools to prepare you for your journey.
Ongoing sessions
We will process and deconstruct your psychedelic experience in the context of your embodied intentions. This may look like using mindfulness to turn toward your somatic (bodily) and emotional experiences; using art and other creative expression to foster greater understanding; exploring core beliefs driving your thoughts, feelings and behaviors; noticing the relationship/patterns between significant events and people in your life; and examining how your experience is changing your understanding of your values, purpose, and goals.
Examples of embodied intentions could include:
Who are the people I would like to forgive?
What’s holding me back in life?
Who do I want to be in this world?
What would I like to change in my life?
What fears would I like to let go of?
How I can I be more intimate with my partner?
How can I be a more solid container for my emotions?
How can I be more in touch with my desires and needs?
These intentions are not just thoughts; they are also felt deeply in the body. Your deepest emotions are the fuel for your journey: they hold the power for change.
What it does not look like
Due to the illegal nature of these substances, I do not offer psychedelic-assisted therapy (taking a psychedelic substance during a session).
There is a growing scientific community interested in studying psychedelics for psychiatric conditions using rigorous scientific methods within a safe and supportive clinical setting. As research studies continue to show the efficacy of these substances – particularly MDMA and psilocybin – to treat treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), these medicines will continue to gain traction for their legalization. Currently, MDMA is on track (in Phase III clinical trials) for FDA approval within the next few years.
(I will continue to update this section as the status of these medicines changes.)
